Pope Calls Reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral a Prophetic Sign from the Lord

Paris, November 7, 2024: Pope Francis has called the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on December 8, 2024, a prophetic sign of renewal for the Church in France, more than five years after the devastating fire that severely damaged the cathedral in April 2019. Delivered through Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin to the French bishops during their Plenary Assembly in Lourdes on November 5, the message emphasizes the significance of this event as a symbol of hope and faith. The Pope encourages the Church in France to recognize this moment as a powerful sign from the Lord, reminding them of their mission to proclaim the Good News of salvation, proud of their history and committed to their irreplaceable role in the nation’s spiritual and cultural life.

In his message, Pope Francis reflects on the relationship between the Church in France and African Churches, expressing his hope for strengthened bonds of unity and mutual support inspired by "one spirit in Christ." He highlights the importance of charity, solidarity and collaboration in fostering missionary renewal and contributing to a more just and fraternal world. The Pope also acknowledges the challenges of evangelization, urging the bishops to welcome the guidance of the Holy Spirit in facing these challenges and embracing reforms to meet the evolving needs of their communities.

The Pope also referenced his encyclical on the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Dilexit Nos, stressing the vital role of the love of the Sacred Heart in shaping the future of the Church. He encouraged the bishops to rediscover this devotion, which has a rich history in France, as a key to transforming society and renewing the Church's mission. Closing his message, Pope Francis extended his blessings to the bishops, their collaborators and the faithful of France, offering words of encouragement and trust.
